TOURIST TRAP, BIG CITY, BIG CROWDS, RED LIGHT DISTRICT

We awoke to another beautiful sunny day.  Zaanse Schans in Zaanstadt is a tourist trap open air museum with windmills. A stop here on our way to Amsterdam provided more windmills and lots of tour busses with lots of tourists. There was a chocolate factory in the town that filled the air with the aroma of cocoa.

Next stop--Amsterdam. It is a big city with a lot of people. Rick Steves describes a walking tour in his book which we followed. Since it is the Dutch Memorial Day the main square was being set up for a large ceremony with the new king and his wife.

We felt like we couldn’t leave without taking a canal cruise and a short walk in the red light district. My take on the red light district? Very sad, because the young girls we saw all looked so unhappy…it broke my mother’s heart.
