A STEAMING VOLCANO

Kagoshima is one of the cities Jim was in during his mission. The big attraction here is Sakurajima, an active volcano that spews out steam and ash nonstop. We took the ship’s shuttle to Dolphin Port where we caught the ferry over to Sakurajima. The plan was to take the bus around the island and up to an observation point. When we got to the bus stop there were about 60 people in line for a bus that only runs once an hour. It was hot and Hank was feeling good and nobody wanted to play sardine on an overloaded bus, so we took the ferry back to Dolphin Port. Hank and Linda decided to return to the ship, and Jim and I decided to take the bus out to Senganen Garden. It was constructed in 1658 by the wealthy Shimazu Clan who ruled until 1868.

We visited the residence first.

Next we wandered through the beautiful gardens.

The bus took us downtown where we looked for a place to eat. Jim knew department stores have restaurants on the top floors. We found a nice one, and Jim was in heaven with a lunch variety that had 13 different items.

After returning to the ship we had a great view of Sakurajima. It was fascinating watching it spew out steam and ash.

We were given a balloon von boyage.
