A GLORIOUS DAY
On Thursday Luiz had us book tickets to take the train up to the Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) statue at noon, trusting the weather would be good. We woke up to sunshine this morning, but when Luiz picked us up he told us the statue was still enshrouded in clouds, but thought they would be gone by noon.
Before taking us up to the train station he took us from one end of Copacabana Beach to the other.
A large favela exists on the mountain behind the hotels. |
Luiz was right--the Cristo was out in full force by the time we got to the train station! A 20 minute steep ride up the hill, followed by around 100 steps had us standing at the base of glory as well as spectacular views.
We spent the rest of the afternoon driving through the Tijuca National Forest which is within the city limits of Rio de Janeiro. It was beautiful.
