MONDAY, 16 MAY 2011 HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEN! TIME TO CUDDLE A KOALA

The plan for today was to go to the Cairns Tropical Zoo and cuddle a koala. There are not a lot of places where one can do this because it is illegal in some of the Australian states. We had breakfast in the café where we were able to get up close and personal with a cockatoo named Henry,

and a koala named Kimberly.

Australia has some beautiful birds which we got to see in the free flight bird show and throughout the park.
Red tailed black cockatoo-when in flight you can see the bright red tail feathers.

Australian Pelican can hold 15 liters of water in its pouch.

Tawny Frogmouth

Another chance to feed kangaroos.

Then it was time to cuddle with a koala,

and Linda had cuddle time with a young crocodile and python.

We were done at the zoo by noon, ate lunch, then headed into the hills to see the Nerada Tea Farm.
These plants are very old and the new top leaves and buds are harvested every 3 weeks.
It was raining when we arrived at 4 PM, and they were getting ready to close, but not before we saw a couple of tree kangaroos. Who knew?

When we got back to Cairns we went on a harbor dinner cruise. It was pretty lame--it was dark the whole time and the food was not very good.
