2019 EUROPEAN ADVENTURE

SUNDAY – MONDAY, 29 – 30 APRIL 2019

LET THE ADVENTURE BEGIN

BERLIN

Jim & I got up early Sunday morning to get ready for our 2019 adventure. We got the sheets & towels washed, then at 1100 our niece, Jess, picked us up and drove us to SLC. Our flight to Amsterdam left around 1430 and arrived Monday morning around 0800 giving us 2 hours to connect to our flight to Berlin. We arrived in Berlin around noon, collected our bags (which both made it!), caught the express bus to our IBIS budget hotel, and took a short nap.
First thing on our agenda was to visit the Reichstag Dome because I had a reservation to do so for 1830. We decided to walk and got there a little before 1800 and got in line. It was then I realized I had forgotten to bring any ID. They told us it would be okay to come back even though it would be past our reservation time. It was at this point in time we were forced to acquaint ourselves with the Berlin subway system. I had a map in hand but wasn’t sure how to read it, but we got it figured out, went back to the hotel which turned out to be about a hundred yards from a U Bahn stop, got my passport and headed back to the dome. It was a marvelous evening, and we had an enjoyable time walking to the top of the dome and enjoying the views.

Afterwards we walked around the Brandenburg gate area, then headed back to the hotel.

It turns out there are a lot of restaurants, food stands, a market, a bakery, and a post office with an ATM all within a couple of blocks of the hotel. We chose a restaurant that was a “schnitzel house” thinking we would get schnitzel for dinner, but they had a dinner for “two” on the menu that included salad, pork knuckle, three kinds of sausages, sauerkraut, fries, potato wedges, ham, and boneless chicken. It truly was enough for 3 or 4 people. We put a dent in it, but there was no way we could eat it all!!
